Last month, Jason Fenske of YouTube channel Engineering Explained in a manual transmission car. This month, he's back with a new video that shows you how to do the same thing in a car with a traditional, torque converter automatic. It's a simple process, but not as simple as mashing the brake with your left foot and flooring the gas with your right.Because a torque converter multiplies torque–which Fenske explains beautifully here–you don't need as many revs to launch an automatic car as you do a manual car. It takes some trial and error before you strike the balance of enough revs to get off the line quickly, without generating too much wheelspin.Of course, if your car is equipped with launch control, this advice doesn't really apply, since the computer controls everything. It's also worth mentioning that you shouldn't hold the revs for too long before launching, since that'll generate a ton of heat.Once again, understanding the physics behind this will only help you nail your launches every time.
